Fabulous & mysterious, Indonesian hill tribe home decor, natural color ethnic tapestry, Sumba Pahikung organic dye traditional handwoven tribal cotton textile runner EW34
Warm yellow, orangey brick-red, with green, orange, and black, Pahikung-style supplementary warp textile from Sumba, Indonesia. The colors are derived completely from plant-based, vegetable dyes...a costly and time-consuming process. But the soft and subtle color palette obtained with natural dyes is immediately noticeable and....awesome!
These textiles are unique and only one exists in the world exactly like this one.
The black yarn is interwoven with the other colors giving added depth and visual excitement. The weaving is tight and dense and the fabric quite sturdy, yet soft and supple. The item is fairly thick with a nice, textured hand-feel. Either side can be used and I have shown the item from both the front (the darker side) and the back.
NOTE: Please see the last 2 photos which show a dye bleed on the back side of the textile. It looks like this part of the textile came into contact with some water and the black yarn bled out onto the lighter colors. It is barely distinguishable from the front side and blends into the design. Please compare the area on the back with the same area on the front (the 3rd to last photo shows the front area up close).
Total dimensions are 22.5 in. x 72 in. without the fringe. The fringe itself is 4 inches long.
This is a handwoven and hand embroidered textile. Please expect some normal telltale signs of the human textile artist (aberrations in the weaving and embroidery)! Who wants perfect machine made anyway??
