Java Indonesia green beige brown tan boho tapestry Mega Mendung handmade vintage batik Cirebon home decor cotton wax-resist throw ethnic fabric CE98
This is a hand-drawn vintage batik, neither machine made nor hand-stamped. The designs are drawn with a canting (the drawing instrument) and wax after which the fabric is dyed and then washed to remove the wax. Where the wax was placed, the dye cannot penetrate the cloth thus a design is formed by the negative space. I won't go into the process more as that info is readily available on the web from more knowledgeable folk than I. I will only add that the more colors or shades of a color on a batik, the more this whole process must be repeated.
This batik has 6 colors or shades, thus the entire process of drawing the design, dyeing the fabric, and then removing the wax was replicated 6 times. A very time consuming and skill-demanding art.
This design pattern is called "mega mendung" and originates from Cirebon on Java. The designs represent clouds and in fact the name "mega mendung" means clouds/cloudy. The original design was influenced by Chinese culture when one of the royal family in Cirebon married with a Chinese royal at the time the design was first produced.
Some slight imperfections in the designs and color are normal in these handmade textiles and to be expected.
The dimensions are 96 in. x 40 in.
